“Rated” tournaments simply means that results of the games are sent to the US Chess Federation by approved tournament directors and are recorded to determine players ratings in a national database. Games are more competitive than casual play, chess clocks are used and notation is required (in longer time controls). Playing in these events is one of the best practices for players looking to improve. It’s also a lot of fun!
